Synopsis from Goodreads:

She could save the world—or destroy it.

Sixteen year old Evangeline “Evie” Greene leads a charmed life, until she begins experiencing horrifying hallucinations. When an apocalyptic event decimates her Louisiana hometown, Evie realizes her hallucinations were actually visions of the future—and they’re still happening. Fighting for her life and desperate for answers, she must turn to her wrong-side-of-the-bayou classmate: Jack Deveaux.

But she can’t do either alone.

With his mile-long rap sheet, wicked grin, and bad attitude, Jack is like no boy Evie has ever known. Even though he once scorned her and everything she represented, he agrees to protect Evie on her quest. She knows she can’t totally depend on Jack. If he ever cast that wicked grin her way, could she possibly resist him?

Who can Evie trust?

As Jack and Evie race to find the source of her visions, they meet others who have gotten the same call. An ancient prophesy is being played out, and Evie is not the only one with special powers. A group of twenty-two teens has been chosen to reenact the ultimate battle between good and evil. But it’s not always clear who is on which side….
Diving in...
I am going to keep this review pretty short, but it's not because I didn't like the book.  I really liked it!  In fact Kresley Cole is in my top 5 favorite authors.  While I don't think this is anywhere near as good as her Immortals After Dark series, it's a great start to a YA series.  The reason I say it's not near as good is because it's YA.  I think that sometimes an author is just better at one genre, and in my opinion, Kresley writes better Adult stories.

I have read 2 YA paranormal books in the past few weeks with the main character named Evie.  This book and The Diviners.  While I did like this Evie much better here are a couple things I noticed about both stories
  • both lead females have the same name
  • both girls have a Supernatural ability that they are unsure of at first
  • both girls are just a piece of a larger puzzle (One is Arcana, the other Diviner)
  • Both girls are a little annoying (not so much with this Evie, just a little!)
  • There is a weird speech thing in each book.  Cajun in this one, 20's slang in the other.
Those were just some weird things I noticed as I was reading.  I really did like this Evie better.  She comes across as really weak and superficial in the beginning, but as the story progresses you can tell that there is something fierce inside that is just waiting to be let loose.

I loved Jackson, he's hot, he's Cajun and I didn't even mind reading his inflection.  What I didn't get was the constant drinking and while I am sure there is a reason for it, I just wonder how long we have to wait to find out what it is.

I will say that I think that all the teen angst and jealousy did take away from the overall story somewhat.  They are struggling to survive and yet she is worried that he might like another girl more than he does her...  I think that this issue will be less prominent in the next book, or at least I hope it is!

I loved the idea of the living Tarot cards and I know that I haven't ever read anything like this before.  Sure, there are characters that are like zombies, it's post-apocalyptic and there are things that have been done before, but overall I think that this story line and the world that she is creating here is very unique.  We met a couple of the Arcana, but there are lots more to come and I can't wait to see how this story progresses.  I just hope we don't have to wait too long for the second book!

I would re-read this book, in fact I probably will when the next installment comes out.  I highly recommend this to anyone who likes YA Paranormal especially if you like a post-apocalyptic twist.
