I am living in Sri Lanka where we are having torrential rains in some parts of the country - 21 dead and one million people displaced. I have no idea of what we could do - other than to help in whatever way we can.

ReplyDeleteI'm in the midwest and we have snow up to our knees (to put it mildly). Guess we haven't had rain for about 6 months. But with rain I could leave my car outside and it would get a little cleaner than it is right now. The book looks wonderful.

What wonderful ideas in the book. Last days we (in Germany) have also rain, rain and some more rain. During such days I try to battle my sleepiness - I design new quilts, appliques, play with my cats and listen to good music. This really works :)

ReplyDeleteWe are just about through our rainy season and because I grew up in the part of Canada that has snow I truly love the rain. When it is a really rainy day well I make a date with my sewing machine and quilt fabric and we have a party!

ReplyDeleteWe are having a lot of rain here too at the moment. I've quilted, I've cooked & I've painted the kids table & chairs - anything to avoid going out in it!
Well, here in Hawaii we have just had a huge storm & are expecting another by Monday. I stay indoors & ready for the small creatures than look for refuge in the kitchen! We had a tiny frog yesterday & a millipede this morning. I'm expecting the ant invasion at any time!

hmm... when it rains here, we (my daughter and I) usually hibernate and bake and quilt. I'm thinking some sunny fabrics would brighten up the day!

Being from the North-northwest, I can tell you that it's pretty soggy up here in Vancouver, too. At least it is warm. Get a pair of Hunters and a massive umbrella, or stay inside and sew! ReplyDeleteWe battle with thunderstorms here in France, I thought I knew what a thunderstorm was until I came to live here, never seen lightening like it, and the thunder vibrates through the house, the rain comes down in sheets......the shutters are all closed to protect the windows and we stay nice and safe inside. ReplyDeleteI live in Snohomish and don't actually battle the rain, I just go with it! The hardest thing for me is to take advantage of sunny days...there's no room for "I'll wait til tomorrow!" Ya gotta drop everything and take advantage of nice weather!

ReplyDeleteOoh I just LOVE what I have seen so far about this book. It's so great that she goes from beginner to advanced. Someone not quite confident of their skills as a quilter can start with something from the book for beginners and then once that helps build their confidence, they can continue in the same book and with the same awesome patterns onto more advanced quilts. LOVE that.

ReplyDeleteI live in the Northeast so we battle a lot of snow here. However, we do get lots of rain in the spring. I prefer to put on my funky LL Bean wellies and stomp in the puddles with my kids!

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have to "battle" the rain I love it. I love walking in it, watching it and daydreaming and saving it in old garbage cans to water plants with when it gets too hot to rain in the Summer. It's a great excuse to stay in jammies and feel the luxury of doing nothing sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI love summer rain and take walks in the warm rain or sit and read, listening to the rain. Cold rain is something else all together! A fireplace helps, giving a feeling of cosy and warm - and helps with the humidity! I have a really hard time with grey days, so I have lots of lights in my quilt room and kitchen. I play great music and get absorbed in what I'm doing. My daughter just moved from an extremely dry climate to an extremely humid climate for school. I bought her a really sturdy umbrella for the really windy days, a clear plastic umbrella for not so windy days (so she can see where she's going), great rainboots, and great outerwear. I gave her a beach-inspired quilt and lamps for her dorm.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win :) I lived in Portland, OR for 2 years and I found that in the winter, the best option was to get out to the mountains where the rain is snow and in the fall/spring (that is, when it was still warm), just go out and play in it. Then again, staying inside to quilt isn't a bad option either!

Hilo (Hawaii), is "the rainiest population center in the US" (we're too small to be "rainiest city"). Rain here = spectacular waterfalls, lush tropical greenery, and lots of orchids and other flowers, so we don't fight it. But I prefer to spend rainy days in the sewing room rather than splashing around outside.

ReplyDeleteI live in the rain too, on a windy island in Alaska. There isn't any way to really deal with it, ya just gotta accept it. Forget about umbrellas and invest in a gore-tex jacket with a hood.

I love the rain! I remember one particularly rainy day in PDX where I got completely soaked walking from my high school to the Tri-Met stop! Now with two young children I embrace the chance to act like a kid and jump in the puddles! I love the pinwheels quilt and the lonestar quilt! I'm adding this book to my wish list just in case I don't win.

I believe most of us are battling some kind of bad weather. Here in the south, we just had about 8 or so inches of snow and it has absolutely paralyzed us because we don't have equipment to handle it. Not used to it! I think we all need to thank God for our good fortune, those of us not being flooded or living with tsunamis of any other devastating weather, and beg Him for relief for the world. The weather has been absolutely wild of late! Maybe there is a message in it for all of us. God be with us. So I say, prayer is the answer.

ReplyDeleteTwo ways. One, dress up in a raincoat and boots and go for a short walk and two, stay in and hibernate until it stops. There's loads of sewing, knitting, reading to be done here.

I really admire the way Emily is using traditional patterns and remaking them for modern quilters;I think Emily's color choices are calm yet very hip!. amazing!
ReplyDeleteGive love to the rain. if it's light, thank it for cleansing the earth and making the air smell so darn good. If it's deep, well, make a boat out of a sled and grab some brooms to use as oars! Whatever the amount, get outside and make some memories!
In Houston it just floods so my rainy day behavior is just to stay inside cuddled under a quilt reading!

ReplyDeleteWe lived in Seattle for about two years. We loved it there except for the traffic and the fact that all of our family lives in the eastern USA. We were surprised to discover that it hardly ever rains hard enough to bother with an umbrella. Plus the beautiful weather during the summer makes a little rain easy to put up with! ReplyDeleteWe have a wet season, but nothing like what you get there. Generally if there is a good rain, I just go out in it and have a good ol' time. But we don't normally get rain in winter. Mostly it's summer. So for these days...I'd cuddle up with some hot chocolate/tea/coffee and a good blanket and sit in a chair and watch it. :)

ReplyDeleteWhen I moved to Chicago from Southern California, I learned to take out your cutting board first thing in the morning, slice an onion on it and leave it on the counter. Then, keep your PJs on and go quilt all day. When your hubby and kids come home, they will think you have dinner all planned. When it gets too late to make dinner, order pizza!

ReplyDeleteI live in Sydney Australia. We're in summer here but are having the wettest on record just about. It is warm and very, very humid. Most un-Sydneylike. However we are blessed compared to the poor Queenslanders whose houses are under water and whose loved ones have been washed away by the floods. Three-quarters of that state is under water and Queensland is bigger than Texas so that'll give you an idea of the devastation.

Well, up here in Canada we've just had 12 more inches of snow and it's -26 C (that's -12 F) and rain would be quite lovely compared to this :) I say just stay inside and keep sewing - the rain won't bother you a bit! ReplyDeleteAs far as the rain... when I lived in Taiwan, they had some seriously cute umbrellas! I think those need to come to N. America. :)
I battle the rain with coffee like most Portlanders. I do love my new raincoat. I'm excited to see the book.
ReplyDeleteI am in Australia - not in the Queensland floods, but my state of Victoria is getting hit quite hard too! This is our Summer!! Usually I don't let rain stop me from doing anything - it's only water - but when its super heavy - I go blog reading!

ReplyDeletePuddle jumping with my 3 and 4 year olds makes all of our Pacific Northwest rain much more bearable. All the green trees are a nice benefit, too. :-)

ReplyDeleteI'm sitting at my computer right now as the NW has inches of rainfall. I'm listening to the rain pound on my south window and beat on my skylights. I battle the rain by organizing and developing my new projects, surfing the web, sewing, quilting and being creative.

ReplyDeleteI like the shopping online for fabric idea. Although to beat the rain I would find your most loved, snuggly quilt, find a cozy spot and curl up under it. Works for me.

ReplyDeleteI used to live in a place where the average rainfall was 300 days a year - it's where I (happily) started to quilt 10 years ago - and that's just what I've been doing this summer in Queensland. I've (not so happily) also been glued to the TV watching my fellow Queenslanders devastated by floods, I'm definitely one of the lucky ones - think I'll take a break from quilting next weekend to help with the cleanup.

ReplyDeleteMy husband battles the rain for our family - clearing the storm drains and digging little trenches. When the rain is a little more light-hearted, I do fine by rolling up my jeans to "high-water" levels and trying to avoid puddles! Thanks for the book giveaway - it looks delightful.

ReplyDeleteLots and lots of coffee and then get on with it. No boots and no umbrella, it is usually only misting a bit! I have to laugh after spending half of my life in the NW I really never used an umbrella until moving to Upstate NY where when it rains is a downpour. I actually miss lovely Pacific NW overcast days.
ReplyDeleteI like to stay in and read or sew when it is rainy. If I have to go out I wear a hat or cap to keep rain off my glasses AND use an umbrella.

ReplyDeleteI live in the NW as well - we don't get as much rain as where you do but when it rains I love it. Crazy I know.... I have a covered patio so I love the sound of rain on it. So my advice to deal with the rain is to embrace it. Stay inside when its cold with a quilt & a good book or some hand work. Sit outside when its warm with some iced tea & something.

ReplyDeleteOh, what I would not give for rain. Am living in the great white north and it has been -20oC for almost a week and its hard to stay really warm here. The rain in summer is also still very cold. I found myself outside last summer working during a rainy farmer's market and was so cold when I got home I needed to jump into the tub for a hot soak. Long story short, I used too much oil laced bubble bath and was seriously worried if I'd be one of those people found in my tub since I could not get out. Now I opt for long hot showers...lol

My method of handling the rain is to stay inside unless I absolutely have to go out. That said when I go out I have a good pair of Hunter wellies and a strong umbrella...I'd still rather stay inside though!

ReplyDeleteI'm in the Northwest as well. Oy, the rain at times... These are some things I do at times: turn on all the lights in the house and crank up the heat and play summer music, or... bake... or head to the mountains and enjoy the snow... or shut the shades, head for the sewing room and sew on bright colors.

As you shake your head and think I'm kidding, I regularly go out in downpours, clad in a twirly skirt and galoshes, and dance my way from car to parking lot while all the poor saps are standing huddled under Target's entryway. Just love the rain, and it'll love you back :)
I would give in, put in a movie and finish up some quilts!

To cope with the rain I would probably just go with the flow! If it didn't rain then I wouldn't live on the 'Emerald Isle' (Ireland) but in a very dusty brown one!

ReplyDeleteI grew up in Vancouver, also known for it's rain and drizzle. My advice is just to grab a gorgeous umbrella (I'd love to try making one from all the laminates we've been seeing), put on your best heels, and ignore it!

I am living in Australia where Queensland and Victoria are both suffering floods. Queensland is the worst hit state with 15 people confirmed dead and 53 people still missing. Quilters are organising raffles and auctions with all donations going to the Flood Relief Fund. One way to battle, not so much the rain, but the devastation it has caused.
