let's just call a spade... a spade.

it's that time again when we all start thinking about what & how we're going improve in the next year... and that got me thinking... i definately have much to improve on and not all of it revolves around my sewing machine!! so, my first declaration ( if you will ) is that...
i am one big o'l fat spade! it's true... and here's the reason why... i lOVE comments!! i pretty much daydream about having like a million each time i post something, now i can pretend i don't care and that know one's approval matters to me... but for most days... it totally does! true. LOL ----> l i s t e n <----
i realize this isn't going to come as an "earth shaken" shocker to most of you all... but what might, ( pathetically so ) is my admittance that... I ALMOST NEVER LEAVE THEM! embarrassing... yeah???... how friggin lame am i??? i love them and want them, yet never ( rarely ) leave them! so, my proposal ( to myself - made public ) is that i will commit to leaving a comment if i read your blog! now, i can't make unreasonable promises that they will be clever, witty, or that they just actually won't be completely boring comments, really... but YOU guys inspire me and i DO read a ton of blogs... and i'm wanting to send big blog-love out next year, so that's it... i'm a spade trying ( in 2011 ) to become a heart! i look more than forward to following you next year and proving it!! ;) XO, Heather
ps... hope you all had a fabulous Christmas! i got a new couch... and i cussing love it!

  1. Funny! I had to post a comment because it is so true. I read a ton of blogs and like you I love to get comments on my own blog if for no other reason than just to know someone is listening to what I have to say. And while I do leave comments on some blogs I will admit that I very rarely commit on the blogs of people I look at as having some kind of higher authority in this online quilting community. Silly right, I just figure they are too busy to read what I have to say. So maybe I will work on that in the new year. Heck starting with this comment right now :)

  2. I just started that resolution myself. I have been going really well using the "next" feature on Google.

  3. Yeah, I'm bad about comments too and I get so much inspiration from all of these blogs. I should be sending cash or something! ;) Maybe comments would be sufficient or at least a start until I can send money!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'm just as guilty of not leaving comments, but expecting others to. Good luck, and I'm looking forward to a year full of alamode craftiness;)

  5. I am gonna try too... so here is one to start with... have a great year!

  6. Well here is one for you :) I am even worse though as much as I hate to admit it, I love getting comments but almost never reply to them, I always mean to but somehow it never happens. So please don't feel the need to respond to this, and if you leave a comment on my blog and I don't respond I apologise now :)

  7. LOL! Heather, since I've been reading blogs via google, there are lots of times I don't leave comments either. The plain truth is I'm like a kid in the candy store...looking at all the beautiful pictures and such. Hey, you've got a great blog and I'll make sure I leave a comment!

  8. I'm with you .. I so do the same thing, here is to a comment filled new year :)

  9. I love getting comments although I rarely do on my nearly reader-less blog. I do, however, leave comments when something has inspired me. (And "no" this doesn't include giveaway posts!)
I've also been known to send an email from time to time. Here's to 2011!

  10. My name is jenni. And I'm a blog lurker. It's been....well...forever since I left a comment on your blog. But I do enjoy it ;)

  11. After reading that, how can I not leave a comment! Actually, I do leave comments a lot of the time. I don't have a blog so I don't know how the reverse works, but if I did have a blog I probably wouldn't have the time to leave comments on others. Especially typing in these word verifications that half the time I can't even read!
For the record, I just missed it & will have to try reading the second one

  12. I love your blog!

I have a very boring blog...no tutorials...not much going on. I love to read what others are doing.

Seems many blogs I follow are "in the business" and since I can not afford to buy fabric it is a way to learn about all the new lines.

Your "spade a spade" post is so honest and really says what many of us think but have not confessed it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Love it Heather!! I'm always amazed when I've gotten to the end of my reader list and realize I haven't left a single comment.

  14. I've also been thinking about all the inspirational, honest, funny, informative posts I don't respond too. I want to start thinking about this wonderful blogland as more of a community. I would never stop by someone's house in real life without speaking. And after meeting so many blog writers at the KC Modern Quilt guild it's made me realize that there ARE REAL people writing blogs. I want to be more neighborly. Which means I need to stop checking Reader on my phone. I like to write comments in front of a real keyboard.

  16. I commit to making comments. Sometimes I'll set a number. You can't comment on every blog you read...but I can do much better.

So, tonight I will comment on at least 5. Thanks for the reminder that we need to support one another.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Guilty here too! Good resolution, but don't eat up all your creative time leaving comments :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Did you order a custom couch or buy off the floor? I just remember what I went through the last time I bought one.
Or maybe your man surprised you with one?

    ReplyDelete
  19. We should all take more time and leave comments. We all love to receive them so I think we should all take the pledge.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh honey, I rarely leave blog messages either, yet, like you, I love to get them. Are we spoiled brats? Maybe! You are even on my everyday reading list, if you can believe. I promise to be better......amen!

    ReplyDelete
  21. So here is a happy, thumbs up comment for you. None of us can leave one every time, but yeah, if it's deserved, do. It feels good to give and receive! Now, go enjoy your couch...

  22. You're funny! Comments are the best so glad to hear you're planning on the spreading the love. Santa was nice to you, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's wonderful for you to bring this up. We all love getting comments, and if we read a lot of blogs, it's easy to overlook commenting sometimes. I know that I can improve. I try to always reply when someone leaves a comment on my blog. I know that there are several very popular blogs out there that I have left a comment on and never received a reply....it makes me not want to leave any more comments....blogland friendships are a two way street just like everything else. Thanks for your honest post!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I am the same.....always thought it was just my shyness that stopped me from commenting.
I have been trying harder in the last weeks though :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks for the reminder, Heather! I think we all love to get comments - but get so busy we neglect to leave them! I absolutely love your blog and try to leave comments - but the holidays may have gotten the better of me this year. I'll try to leave you lots of bloggy love in the future! I hope you had a merry Christmas!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. ohhh guilty!!!(pointing at myself)....most of the time I am way too busy jamming out and head banging to your uber-hip tunes that I fail to leave a comment myself, so I'm thinkin that you are in some pretty good company with the rest of us blog-stalkers!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't have a blog but always want to know what you are up to, as it inspires me each day. In addition, you supply that daily dose of laugh therapy we all need. I will leave comments on the blogs I visit this year. I'm usually so awestruck by the immense talent in this community, I am not sure what I could add. But it's a good reminder to know cyber support is great!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I like that resolution. I love comments too and get discouraged if I have too many posts without feedback. And I too am guilty of not leaving enough comments. I like the idea of spreading the love. Thanks for the idea! Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I can appreciate what you are saying. Most of the time I do leave comments even when I do not know the blogger personally, as in the case with you. However, I always appreciate knowing that folks are reading what I post. Good luck with your effort!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Can't wait to see you over at my blog some day!! I love reading yours. Good luck to you and your changes in the new year.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ditto! I rarely leave blog comments - I DO leave flickr comments .... Heather I'd be honored if you commented on my blog someday ;-) .... actually wait until it's comment worthy.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It is not easy to comment when you're busy with life and/or in a hurry. I do follow your blog and i do make an effort to comment here or there if I feel moved to do so no matter how cheesy the comment itself may be.

Also, I love reading many of your posts. This one is hits home. Personally, I think you're no spade, you already all heart. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I was on a "4 comments a day" kick for a while, but it faded away. This is a good habit for me to pick up again! :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. This is also one of my things to improve on. My new iPad makes it much easier to read on the go and leave comments when I have the time.

    ReplyDelete
  35. oh, you are too funny!!! ;)
    so true, so true!

    ReplyDelete
  36. When I first started blogging, about 4 years ago, a mega-blogger, Mrs. G., let me in on her secret, comment, comment, comment. So I did, and she still stops by once in a while.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I also should say the the famous Ree Drummond, the Pioneer Woman, feels she's too important to comment. When I read that I knocked her out of my reader - FAST!

    ReplyDelete
  38. lol It looks like there are a bunch of us "lurkers" I as well rarely comment, but read a bunch of fabulous blogs all the time. I always find inspiration on your blog, thanks for keeping it up!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Your post just hit home with no doubt at least 87.3% of us.
I reads lots of blogs and don't always comment, gee, what's new - -
This coming year I am going to attempt to be a better person - not just for 2011 but a better person from now on. Commenting on posts that have been thought about, composed and blogged is the least I can do to let the blogger know her thoughts were read. That all is not floating in cyber space being ignored.
Another promise to my self is to really try to be a TRUE friend -
that is; to live up to the responsibilities of being a Friend.

Thanks for giving me something to think about as I get ready to end the day.

    Happy Holiday Hugs,
    Gerry

  40. Too funny!!! I have to admit I am kind of the same...well, I go through phases - sometimes I will comment a lot, and sometimes not at all. I have to agree with Greta (1st commenter on this post) - sometimes I am a little intimidated by the big bloggers and feel too shy to leave a comment. Silly indeed. :-p

    ReplyDelete
  41. You are SO funny! I try hard to leave comments just so others know there is someone out there reading them ... whatever they write. ... You, however, make blog reading fun, so thank you sincerely!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Heartfelt thanks for all the smiles you added to my 2010. I'll be here in 2011, right along with you.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I am right there with you. I read...well let's just say a lot of blogs. Do I leave a comment when they make me chuckle, when the project they are working on is amazing, or just to say...way to go!!!
Thanks for bringing this topic to my attention...I am going to try and become a major commenter!!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. That is a great way to start the year...so stop over and read my blog and..yes leave a message. I have never had more than 16 comments! Dianntha

    ReplyDelete
  45. I had the same realization recently, and ever since i have been leaving more comments for others. :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. ha ha - I do (and feel) the same thing...I try and comment most days but some days I'm just too lazy and tell myself that other people are feeling the same...

The "Next" button on Google reader is so fantastic!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think that is an excellent idea and resolution (if you want to call it that!) I am just like you in that I love comments, however, I only have a few followers and I am hoping to change that over the next year. Happy New Years and belated Merry Christmas!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Heather you're so funny! I think we're all guilty and we should all post more comments. Glad you're loving your couch!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yep , you got it right for me too .
    So I'll break out & comment !!

    ReplyDelete
  50. hehe...had to smile...because i'm just the same...i *LOVE* comments and get extatic when i get more than five :)...i try to "spread" my comment time evenly on all the blogs i read but i guess i am not that good with it...i tend not to leave comments on those which already get a ton or never reply but concentrate on those bloggers who don't...:)

    ReplyDelete
  51. hahahahaha... Thats the funniest!! Dont be too hard on yourself.. most of us are wives, mothers, some work, some do charity.. and we barely squeeze in some time of our own... just enough to sew.. AND if were really lucky... maybe just enough time to sqeeze in a few quick reads!! xx Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!! xx

    ReplyDelete
  52. What a good idea. I'll start with you. Happy New Year Heather. May 2011 bring you many hours for quilting. Leaving comments on those Scandinavian blogs I follow won't be quite so easy though.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I have some regular commenters on my blog - if they didn't bother to comment I think I'd have assumed nobody was bothering to read what I wrote and...stop. So yeah - commenting is good. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Well, the truth is I have been reading your blog for quite a while and felt butterflies in my stomach when you 'favorited' one of my quilts on flickr :))).

But I feel too akward to leave the comment no. 127 :)

I decided to leave one when I'll be in the first 10 but now you made me do it :D And I said nothing at all :)))) Reply this if you can :)))

    ReplyDelete
  55. get your comment on girl... to have friends ya gotta be one...

    smooches!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think everyone does that, we're all so busy and of course we all want to be wonderfully witty. I've gotten better and leave comments at about 25% (I may be lying here) of the blogs I read. Mostly it's the bloggers I've built a relationship with.

    ReplyDelete
  57. So funny and so true. I tend to not comment when I'm on my iPod because it takes too long to type on there. And I don't always have anything witty to say. But- I do appreciate comments, even when they aren't witty. I will be trying to do better this year along with you.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I was reading your blog and thinking too true!! I am currently staring at my inbox hoping people will comment on my new Bake Shop Tutorial, LOL. And in reading the comments, it seems everyone feels that way. What a great resolution. I will be joining you on this goal to comment as well.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I was/am/was/am in your boat...

I find that the easiest way to make gains in this area is to comment on the blogs of those who comment on yours. (The comment goes to your e-mail, right? The persons is usually hyperlinked, right? - follow the links. At least that is what I did/do/did/do...)

    ReplyDelete
  60. My name is Nicole and I'm a comment addict! I get home from work everyday and check to see if I have any comments. In the spirit of your new years wish, I will try to comment on the blogs I read in 2011!

    ReplyDelete
  61. So great - we all have about the same experience (or lack thereof) with leaving comments. I have several that I comment on everyday - the question is why not all of them? I enjoy them all just as much. I agree and will work tirelessly (I always wanted to say that) to improve starting today.

    Hugs - Marie

  62. I read your blog daily....sometimes twice a day....you make a valid point judging from your responses. You are a leader in the blog community (in my opinion) Keep the blogging a coming !

    ReplyDelete
  63. I read a number of blogs on a daily basis. Some I comment on, some I don't. Sometimes I feel shy about leaving comments in case the blog owner thinks the comments aren't very witty. I can see now that a comment, any comment is well received and I'm making it my New Year's resolution to comment on every blog I read. Hope they don't get sick and tired of me.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hey! I like that goal. I read blogs in a google reader so it takes special effort to comment (I do try to comment on flickr and LOVE getting comments there myself). Your post is a good reminder :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. A great resolution and so true....

    ReplyDelete
  66. I love getting comments too. I read blogs in my google reader to 'save time' searching for new posts. But often google reader is too much of a time saver, and it's not helping to get me to individual blogs to post. What others here wrote is true - if you want comments, you gotta comment too! Although, some of the 'celebrity' blogs (oh how I use that word carefully and sarcastically) you kind of think - meh...they have 1000 followers, does my comment really make a difference?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Can not ignore a plea for comments.
I check your blog out often-and at least get a smile and some new information.
Thank you for taking your time to do this

    ReplyDelete
  68. I feel exactly the same way Heather-darling! I love love love to receive comments and I know we're supposed to be all "secure" and just do things for ourselves but it really does feel good when someone else appreciates what I'm working on.

I don't leave comments as often as I should and often remind myself that I need to and find myself going back to a blog post so that I can leave one. I definitely need to be better at this!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Funny -too often I rush through all of my favorite blogs and don't post a comment either. I'll try harder too!

    ReplyDelete
  70. One thing I learned (the hard way) is that you have to leave comments to get comments. The better part of me reading this email today is that I have been leaving tons of comments because I want more comments too. Best of luck with your goal. It's fun to share (and receive) comment love.

    ReplyDelete
  71. your are so cute, my friend!! i LOVE it!! always honest. :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. If I ever got one hundred comments on a post I'd flip, never mind one million, but I do hope you get that number one day. You would make blog history. I also read many posts, but don't always comment. I'm more inclined to comment to my "friends" online, but that's not the way to meet new bloggers. Anyway, nice resolution.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I check out your blog daily. It's on my favorites. I love the music you have. The first time I found it was when I was searching for info about how to make a spiderweb quilt (which I haven't started yet, but I still really really want to do!) Don't let the lack of comments keep you from blogging. I look forward to your posts & get kind of pissed off when you don't have anything for awhile (just kidding...kind of).

    ReplyDelete
  74. I thought I already sent a comment, but apparently not. Could be because I'm currently having a fantastic martini. Anywhooooo, yes, keep blogging because I look forward to it almost daily. In fact, I get kind of pissed when you don't have anything for awhile. You're on my favorites. I first found your blog when I looked for info about making a spiderweb quilt. I still haven't made it, but when I do (which I will!!!) I will use your instructions.

    ReplyDelete
  75. haha, you comment whore! (it takes one to know one!)Give it to me honey.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I really liked reading this post...I wish I could comment on every post I love, but there isn't the time! But I love your resolution and am also going to try to leave more comments!

    ReplyDelete
  77. haha so funny! But it is so exciting when a "big Fish" blogger leaves a "little fish" blogger a comment, so remember what it was like when you first started blogging and make a small fishes' day!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I read a lot of blogs and try to leave comments on all of them, but not always. I only do a comment if I have something to say or I'm inspired by what they say or a photo.
I have a blog and don't post much on it, so don't get many comments. But when I do it's very exciting!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I love comments, too! So I try to leave them often, but I have found that if I read blogs on my (lame-o) phone, then I am not able to leave comments. Then I am left with the conundrum, do I spend time going back to blog entries that I've already read on my phone just to leave comments, or do I move forward when I am finally at a computer and leave comments on new entries. Moving forward wins out nine times out of ten. (obviously, I'm at a computer right now) I approve of your resolution (as if that is what you were waiting for, MY approval). It will make many bloggers happy to know that you are out there, reading their stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think you have just become the official spokesperson for all of us,especially regarding a good new years resolution. Cheers!
